OUGD501 - Research & Epistemology - Lecture 1

Quantitive Research - Facts, figures, statistics, surveys, measurements and measurable data which can be analysed

Qualitative Research - Explores and tries to understand peoples beliefs, experiences, attitudes, behaviour and interactions. It generates non-numerical data, e.g. asking people of their beliefs and opinions.



Strategy for thinking through a problem -

Assimilation -


  • The accumulation and ordering of general information and information specifically related to the problem in hand

General Study - 

  • The investigation of the nature of the problem
  • The investigation of possible solutions or means of solution

Development -

  • The development and refinement of one or more of the tentative solutions

Communication - 

  • The communication of one or more solutions to people either inside or outside the design team, essays, presentations critiques

This process is then cycles around from phase 1 to phase 4


Analysis - 

  • What is the brief / question about?
  • what do i need to know more about?

Process is more important than the outcome.
